UNITED STATES BILL OF RIGHTS

The U.S. Bill or Rights is one of the pillars of the United States' brand of democracy. Many in America today would argue that they do not go far enough, or that they are being eroded by the powers that be, but you cannot deny that they have made a significant difference in the lives of millions over the past 200 years.

The original bill of rights contained the first 10 ammendments to the U.S. Constitution, and were introduced to the first Congress by James Madison in 1789. They protect speech, religion, guns, private property, unlawful imprisonment, and due process. They basically say that the government can not take away your Awesome. If you have an awesome car, you can keep it; an awesome voice, you can use it; an awesome gun, you can shoot it.

There are many others like it world wide, some are rough copies of it, others much simpler. But in that this site resides in the United States, and that much of the ideas on the site were created by the people from the United States, I think its safe to assume we'd have a lot less awesome in this world without the Bill of Rights.

Any constitution that guarantees that citizens can keep shooting themselves without anyone being able to do anything about it isn't awesome... reply

You have to take into account the time which it was created and the groundbreaking step it took towards equality of citizens, the civil rights movement, the 19th amendment and the UN Charter of Human Rights. reply

This match is huge, #1 vs #8, but the ONLY loss Bill of Rights sustained in the seeding round was to HOCKEY BEAR DESTROYS UNIVERSE. reply

The Further adventures of everyone's favorite destructor. This time he creates a hockey stick like Voltron making its sword. Not as good as the original, but hey at least there's a jet. http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1928127 reply

A constellation of stars all go super nova at once, creating a giant space bear traveling at the speed of light thru the danger zone vaporizing planets. I then slap shots a satellite with its massive hockey stick creating an explosion of letters the size of small planets. Zooming towards the Earth it destroys the moon without even touching it. It shrinks in size upon entry to the atmosphere but after its impact in Anchorage making the entire city a smoldering crater it grows yet again. The space bear then tramples thousands of acres of forest on the way to the Carlson Center to punch a hole in the roof. It inexplicably shrinks down to a fraction of its original size and ruins the ice for the game that is about to start. Its roar distorts human speech to the point that nothing is intelligible. And then, the Sandman Enters. reply

Rough copies? Our Bill of Rights dates back to 1689. reply

I don't think anyone is implying that the English Bill of Rights is based on the U.S. one; the truth is quite the contrary. The two do differ substantially though, in form as well as intent.. the British version addressed the rights of citizens as represented by Parliament against the Crown. No offense, but I don't think its as awesome, as it really does not protect individual liberties of the average man the way the US version did. reply

How can anyone argue this is awesome when it contains the very amendment that causes all the problems you have with gun control over there? The right to bear arms in our 1689 Bill, on the other hand, was much better written as it contained the following caveats, 'Freedom for Protestants to have arms for their own defence, as suitable to their class and as allowed by law'. reply

I agree that the right to bear arms is a mess. The original right was considered a check and balance against an abusive government. In reality today, no American has access to weapons that would truly defend themselves against this government. Most people buy guns to protect themselves against other people with guns. Its like saying we need the right to murder, because there are murderers out there. People who are responsible and trustworthy and wish to hunt for food should be allowed guns. Everyone else, no. But it is hard to deny someone a weapon if they live in an area with a lot of treat of gun violence. Its a no win situation. reply

Yorky replied to Ivan Awesomeoff on 2/2/2010
Firstly there'd be less gun violence in that area if there were more arms controls. Secondly, it should be up to law enforcement agencies to deal with gun violence: not any old Tom, Dick, or Harry, with no weapons training (which isn't just about shooting well and clearing stoppages: it covers when to discharge the weapons and how to do so in a way to minimise the danger to innocent bystanders as well). reply
