          SPACE INVADER INVASION
1st Place April 09 Have you ever happened upon a tiled Space Invader on a city street? Most of these creations are the work of one man. He likes to be called "Invader". For the past eight years he has been traveling the planet earth playing his own reality Space Invader game. For every tiled Space Invader he cements in place he gives himself points. He has Invaded 35 cities on five continents. He is documenting his invasion and even offers a collection of maps. If your planning a trip to one of the invaded cities stay alert, bring your laser beam and remember they like to move sideways.

      POLIO VACCINE
You like Freerunning? You like Roller Derby? You like wingsuit base jumping? Then you must like the polio vaccine. In 1952, 58,000 Americans were afflicted with paralysis-causing polio. In 1955, the polio vaccine was introduced. In 1957, only 1,800 cases of polio were reported in the U.S.A. In 2008, there were none. That's right, a horrible, endemic disease has been eliminated in the U.S.A., and is close to elimination worldwide, because of the polio vaccine ... thats the definition of awesome. Millions of people remain unparalyzed because of the polio vaccine. It's hard to participate in MLG when you're in an iron lung.

Wow, i know. I mean its kinda awesome, but not undefeated awesome. Its like a video game version of Where the Hell is Matt, but without the depth and meaning of it.

Although, I do think it's the most awesome graffiti ever. It takes a lot more thought and time than just using a can of spray paint.

I'm quite fond of the fact that he installed several of his works at the MOMA, the British Museum and the Tate ... without anyone knowing about it for several weeks.

Banksy is super-awesome...but I also love the fact that Invader is not only doing guerilla art, he's got his own points system for it. That's so unnecessary as to be awe-tastic!!!

Somehow I just can't see the vaccine as possessing that special "awesomeness" quotient- it's more like it's discovery was necessary and inevitable and great, but it needs that extra "pop".

It is one of the most effective disease prevention tools ever invented! Polio was almost entirely wiped out of North America *within a decade*!

I don't disagree with you there...but I feel that this contest is about an extra quality as yet undefinable about some things, not just things that are best; otherwise, just about every medical, scientific, and social advancement in history would come before pretty much everything on here.

No, not every scientific advancement, only ones that fundamentally changed the lives of just about everyone on the globe for the better. This was one of the most profound moments ... and it has been an unalloyed good. That is awe-inspiring.
