Luchadores
LUCHADORES

Nominated by The Dude

Lucha Libre is professional wrestling in Mexico and other spanish speaking countries. But its not just the mexican flavor of WWE. It is way more awesome.

For starters, almost all competitors wear masks or full outfits and take on elaborate personas. The masks are so sacred to the sport, its grounds for disqualification if a wrestler takes another's off fully. Often a competitor will not remove their mask until their final bout, a symbol that their character is no more.

Luchadores are also typically a lot more high flying than their American counterparts. Their moves are more elaborate and take a lot more skills to pull off. They are really showcasing incredible acrobatic skills in the ring (as well as great acting).

The Jack Black movie Nacho Libre would never have worked were it not for the awesomeness of Mexican Luchadores. Many the opponents he faced in the film are real wrestlers south of the border, especially Satan's Cavemen!

"Do you remember that one time. When the people were all shouting my name.... and I used my strength to rip my blouse." - Nacho Libre

Anyone else notice how some of the "space invaders" look more like Pac-Man ghosts? reply

Alright guys. Surely men in masks that can defy gravity and flip around in acrobatic ways are far more awesome than some guy sneaking around doing tile work in the middle of the night. I just don't know that SII deserves all the attention it gets. I mean srsly, if you were on the street in Mexico, and you saw two luchadores fighting, and looked over and saw a little pixelated alien in tiles stuck to the wall, which would you be more inclined to get excited about? That's right... Luchadores FTW! reply

Very true, a luchadore certainly inspires more instant awe if you saw the two on the street. But I'm not sure how unique or groundbreaking the average Mexican wrestler is. Invader has quietly led an artistic movement that has tagged 37 cities worldwide. In his native Paris alone there are more than 500 placements of his work. He is not paid for this, earns just a bit of notoriety. He is not your typical artist maxing out profits in snooty galleries, he is just simply, quietly, making the places he goes... a little more awesome. I love a lot about luchadores, but I'm voting SII this time! reply

Yes, for me it comes down to which one is trying harder to make money off of what they do...Invader is anonymous, and has done his thing mostly for the art of it (but I AM going to buy the shoes that leave an alien imprint and "10 POINTS" with each step, because that is awesome.) reply

Could someone attempt to convince me that this is somehow awesome?

Because I currently just don't see it. reply

Wow, i know. I mean its kinda awesome, but not undefeated awesome. Its like a video game version of Where the Hell is Matt, but without the depth and meaning of it. reply

At most it inspires perplexed bemusement... but it doesn't make me feel awe-struck.

Regardless of how neat it may be, SII is simply aweless. reply

Although, I do think it's the most awesome graffiti ever. It takes a lot more thought and time than just using a can of spray paint. reply

Banksy is super-awesome...but I also love the fact that Invader is not only doing guerilla art, he's got his own points system for it. That's so unnecessary as to be awe-tastic!!! reply
