Beware of the man who works hard to learn something, learns it, and finds himself no wiser than before... He is full of murderous resentment of people who are ignorant without having come by their ignorance the hard way. - Kurt Vonnegut, "Cat's Cradle"

Kurt Vonnegut was one of the sharpest and most interesting minds of the 20th century. His books were satirical, dark, poignant, intellectual and yet extremely accessible. His most famous books, Cat's Cradle, Slaughterhouse-Five, and Breakfast of Champions are all considered works of science fiction, and yet the criticisms and satire are very applicable to the world we live in. Vonnegut was a socialist, and an open critic of the latest American wars and until the day he died.

While his work was often political in nature, he rarely named specific politicians until he ceased writing fiction. But he was often quoted in the 2000's with blistering critiques of the Bush administration in writing for In These Times. Having been a soldier and prisoner of war in World War II, he was especially angered by the administration's treatment of soldiers.

"By saying that our leaders are power-drunk chimpanzees, am I in danger of wrecking the morale of our soldiers fighting and dying in the Middle East? Their morale, like so many bodies, is already shot to pieces. They are being treated, as I never was, like toys a rich kid got for Christmas."

Vonnegut wrote 14 novels, and 10 collections of short stories.

"Many people need desperately to receive this message: I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone"

Life happens too fast for you ever to think about it. If you could just persuade people of this, but they insist on amassing information.
