MAJOR LEAGUE GAMING
Rank: Klinger
Nominated by MikeS
February 2009 Champion

MLG was started in 2002 by Mike Sepso and Sundance DiGiovanni and took on a lofty goal: to form a league, and enough buzz to actually turn video game addicts into professional athletes.

Fast forward 7 years and its clearly mission accomplished. They have a television show on ESPN, prizes as large as $100K, tournaments all over the country, and have enabled hundreds of gamers to go professional. In 2008 they signed a deal with Dr. Pepper to put pictures of professional Halo players on 175 million bottles. Think about that for a second, that's not Michael Jordan on a soda bottle, its Tsquared, a guy who plays Halo for a living.

Did anyone notice? PRESIDENT OBAMA WAS PHOTOGRAPHED WITH AN MLG BOTTLE ON INAGURATION DAY.

Vote for MLG because you know you had promise when you were 16, your parents didn't see it, but you damn well knew you were the greatest Double Dragon player on the planet. There just wasn't a future in doing that for a living... back then.

I don't know if you call this the 'American Dream' or the new dream that Youtube has created.

Arnel Pineda, once the lead singer for The Zoo (primarly a cover band in Manila) has hit the jackpot.  In February of 2007, a friend of his started posting performances of his on You Tube singing a variety of 70's and 80's rock songs to apparently empty bar rooms.  By June the videos had attracted hundreds of thousands of viewers, including one very important viewer: Neal Schon, the lead guitarist of Journey.  Long story short, Schon found Pineda, Pineda auditioned and became the next lead singer of Journey, and the next show he played was a Brazillian simulcast to 25 million people.

The collaboration has since recorded a platinum album and their tour was the eighth grossing concert in 2008.  Pineda not only sounds like the original Journey frontman, Steve Perry, he might even be a better singer.  He has gone from completely obscurity to worldwide fame in 2 years, and has resurrected one of the best acts the 70s ever produced.

As well as he was playing at Dallas I'd give him two green guns, and he'd still end up on top. Granted he's fighting a plant, but still. reply
