Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, aka IZ, was one of Hawaii's most famous musicians. His release of the album "Facing Future" received attention on the mainland and helped popularized the ukulele. IZ was a large man who played a really small instrument and no doubt is hanging out with some rainbows right about now. Sadly IZ was not long for this world. At only the age of 38 he left us, falling to obesity related respiratory complications. At one point he weighed 769 lbs. But contrary to every prejudice we all have about obesity, anyone who followed his life instantly saw right through his mass—to see a beautiful, kind, loving, gentle man, who loved and cared about the world like none other. There is no doubt IZ was one of the world's most unique individuals, he was totally awesome, and he is sadly missed.

![]() ![]() ![]() LITERAL VIDEO VERSIONS
Special Selection July 2009 Litteral video versions are pretty big fad on YouTube, but the art is being perfected more with each posted video. The concept is simple, there is nothing more pretentious and random than your average 1980's music video. You listen to the song, and maybe don't fully pay attention to how completely lame the visual story is in the video. Fast forward 25 years, and some talented artists are re-recording new lyrics to these lame visuals, and the result is pure gold. The first video in this playlist has more awesome than can be taken in just one viewing. "What the effing crap, that angel guy just felt me up" - pure genius

How different from the original do you think the literal video version of Man From Down Under is?

I recognize that Iz Kamakawiwo'ole is quite awesome, but I have a hard time voting for him because, as a tourist visiting Hawai'i I was subjected to his music in just about every restaurant and shop that every catered to visitors. Every time I hear his music now, I just think of shlocky Waikiki tourist traps. It's sad and certainly unfair, but it takes away from his awesomeness to me.
reply
I feel you. But think about how IZ's influence on Hawai'i has inspired store owners of Oahu to only play his music.

This is looking pretty one-sided: I thought the literal vids would do well.

I think the Ah-ha one is great, but I can not find the original. I'm not going to post the one with that douche from digg, I want the original without the intro or starwars crap at the end. I just can't find it!
reply
Fair enough, the intro and extro are veryh annoying!

This also has Dustin's other three literal videos. Take On Me and Under The Bridge were banned from his YouTube account (though other YT users repost them).
Dust Films (DustoMcNeato on YT) originated the literal video. The four by him, and the eight by DASjr Productions (dascottjr on YT) seem to be the most highly regarded, though HomeStarRunnerTron's two are well-produced, and worth a look.
