CONVERSE ALL STARS
Rank: Schultz Awesome Igi
Nominated by Awesome Igi

Converse All-Stars are the most successful shoe in history. Originating in 1917 and marketed as a performance basketball shoe. Endorsed by Chuck Taylor, the Converse All Star became basketball's shoe of choice and as basketball grew in popularity so did Converse All Stars.

Chucks are just as popular today. But not as a basketball shoe or any kind of performance shoe. They are a fashion statement, one as diverse as the country we live in.

ISRAEL KAMAKAWIWO'OLE
Rank: Blade TinManCometh
Nominated by TinManCometh

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, aka IZ, was one of Hawaii's most famous musicians. His release of the album "Facing Future" received attention on the mainland and helped popularized the ukulele. IZ was a large man who played a really small instrument and no doubt is hanging out with some rainbows right about now.

Sadly IZ was not long for this world. At only the age of 38 he left us, falling to obesity related respiratory complications. At one point he weighed 769 lbs. But contrary to every prejudice we all have about obesity, anyone who followed his life instantly saw right through his mass—to see a beautiful, kind, loving, gentle man, who loved and cared about the world like none other. There is no doubt IZ was one of the world's most unique individuals, he was totally awesome, and he is sadly missed.

I recognize that Iz Kamakawiwo'ole is quite awesome, but I have a hard time voting for him because, as a tourist visiting Hawai'i I was subjected to his music in just about every restaurant and shop that every catered to visitors. Every time I hear his music now, I just think of shlocky Waikiki tourist traps. It's sad and certainly unfair, but it takes away from his awesomeness to me. reply

I feel you. But think about how IZ's influence on Hawai'i has inspired store owners of Oahu to only play his music. reply
