" from "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" by Hunter S. Thompson Sometimes to understand a life, you must start at the end. At Hunter S. Thompson's funeral, his ashes were fired from a cannon atop a 153-foot tower of his own design (in the shape of a double-thumbed fist clutching a peyote button) to the tune of Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" and Bob Dylan's Mr. Tambourine Man. We all are the stars of of our own stories, but Hunter S. Thompson's story just might be a little more interesting. Creator of Gonzo Journalism, Thompson has written himself into history. This controversial 20th century writer lived his life on the fringes of society and reported about it in his own literary style. Critics can debate the quality of his work and the ethics of his choices but that may be the point that he is worth talking about. This is a man who ran for Sheriff of Aspen, Colorado on the "Freak Power" ticket, on a platform of legalizing marijuana and putting for-profit pot dealers in the stocks.

3rd Place December 08 This is no I-dog! Boston Dynamics has created the BigDog it "runs at 4 mph, climbs slopes up to 35 degrees, walks across rubble, and carries a 340 lb load." Boston Dynamics claims it's 'The Most Advanced Quadruped Robot on Earth.' Pretty cool... but possibly even more awesome is the beta version.

Is it weird that it makes me feel sad when I see that guy kick the Bigdog? And when it starts slipping on the ice. But then I feel happy again when I see him loping about!

Hunter S. Thompson is my favorite nominee I've ever sent in. I'm so thrilled to see him in this venue and to see how he'll stack up. I think the only other nominee I'm really enamored with this month is MST3K.
