Special Selection August 09 Decades from now, when historians begin studying the development of the bass guitar in our generation, they will look to one man. That man is Les Claypool. Beginning with his 90’s jam band Primus, Les has played with a countless number of bands playing a multitude of instruments. His bass selection ranges from an old family banjo strung up bass stylies, to his classic six-stringer, to a wooden hinge-like instrument Claypool may or may not have invented called the Whamola. Claypool's funky, creative playing style on the electric bass mixes finger-tapping, flamenco-like strumming, and slap techniques. He is a multi-instrumentalist, novelist, music producer, actor, film director, fly fisherman, and indeed an awesome dude.

3rd Place July 09 He is the embodiment of eccentric characters. Who else would actually be able to make the Snozzberries taste like real Snozzberries? He was quite a man, from his purple suit to the taming of a breed of creatures known only to us as Oompa Loompas. He possesses creative genius, with the gift of the Scrumpdiddlyumptious Bar and the ability to frighten small children with chocolate rivers and golden egg-laying geese. He was a Humanitarian with his creation of the Everlasting Gobstopper aimed at allowing poor children to be able to purchase said candy only once and it lasting them a lifetime. He was a skilled vocalist, as evident in his motion picture. Some could even claim that he was a mystic and healer with his ability to inspire the lame to walk again. He has spawned many references in such notable programs as Family Guy, the Simpsons, and The Office. As a philosopher, Mr. Wonka's words of wisdom have inspired millions of lives. "If the good Lord had intended for us to walk, he wouldn't have invented roller skates." He is truly a notable and legendary character. I mean c'mon, who never wished for a tree that sprouted Gummy Bears? Specifically though this nomination is of Willy Wonka as portrayed by Gene Wilder, not whatever the book may have led you to dream up, and certainly not the creepy Wonka Johnny Depp gave us.

No bassist in history has ever been recorded slapping the strings of a bass guitar as fast as Claypool can.

Its been interesting to see how some musical entries get worked, and others take off. Seems to me Les Claypool does something that most people understand--he plays bass guitar. We know that that instrument does, what it is used for, what its general limitations are. When we see what he can do with a bass in his hand, it is undoubtedly awesome. Marilyn Manson pops up, and well, he's more of a freak personality than a mind bogglingly talented musician. He may stand for something, and some people may really respond to that, but being a symbol is apparently just not as awesome as exuding talent. Claypool is getting a lot of votes from me, because I simply can not believe he can play a bass like that. He's like Danny MacAskill with a guitar.

Not even Victor Wooten?

After the death of Metallica's bassist Cliff Burton, Les Claypool auditioned for the empty space in the band. Claypool did not earn the spot because James Hetfield said quote "He was too good".
reply
Hell yeah. If you're too good for Metallica, you must be some sort of godlike figure.
reply
not really, metalica in facts suck bigtimes. the only reason they a revered like gods is that their music went mainstream and a few of their songs were acceptable for mainstream radio-stations. Metalica has nothing on Megadeth or Iron Maiden.
( don't hate me i'm a troll! )
reply
I actually agree. Metallica is a bunch of sellouts. They had one or two good albums, but then they kicked me off Napster, and I hate them for it.
reply
clearly an unbiased opinion.

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory is such an awful movie that I would have walked out of the theatre even if it was the in-flight movie.
reply
While I doubt anyone's ready to compare Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory to Citizen Cane, I really didn't think it was that bad of a movie at all. Obviously much of it's awesomeness is due to how it may have fit into your childhood, but as a stand alone story and movie I think it stands up pretty well.

Yes. Yes. More yes. Gene Wilder's Willy Wonka really has impacted my life. Not only is he a candy maker, he also is very philosophic and eccentric which is awesome. Plus, Gene Wilder is one of the greatest actors of all time. I love it so much, I named my dodgeball team "Wonka's Favorites" and made shirts with Gene's face on it. Great nominee.
reply
Why thank you my good man. Gene Wilder has pretty much achieved God status in my book, and it all started with Willy Wonka.
"Who can take tomorrow, dip it in a dream, separate the sorrow and collect up all the cream? The candy man can 'cause he mixes it with love and makes the world taste good." reply
I must concur with yoru sentiment.
Willy wonka is pure genius. But lets keep in mind this is the Wonka played by gene wilder, not that creepy I want to touch yrou kids when yoru not lookign wonka played by johnny depp. Seriously. Does anyone else get creeped out by that guy. reply
Oh yeah, I do. No one who works with candy can have teeth that brilliant. Plus his voice is tweaked up to sound like an eleven year old girl.
