         CONGRESS AVE BRIDGE BATS
If you've spent a night in Austin sometime over the last 20 years, you've like heard tale of the bats of the Congress Avenue Bridge. We heard of this phenomenon on our recent visit to the live music capital, but were totally blown away by the experience. Starting around dusk a few stragglers began to take off for their nightly ritual of eating every flying insect for miles around. After 5 minutes the damn bursts and a steady stream begins to fill the night sky. For 20-45 minutes a column of bats 100 thick pours out, until the 15 million bat population has taken flight. Mexican Free-tail bats migrate north in the warmer months to give birth to their pups. The Congress Avenue bridge is the largest urban bat colony in the US. They started nesting in the bridge when a redesign in the early eighties inadvertently gave birth to the greatest man-made bat nesting habitat on earth. Every night at dusk the bats storm the sky to feast on 10-20 thousand pounds of insects. The event can go on for 45 minutes creating mesmerizing columns of bats that stream across the sky. No words or images can truly describe this event. It is not to be missed if you are ever in the Austin area.
