Special Selection June 2009 This spherical moon size battle station produces the mother of all laser beams. The Death Star is capable of moving throughout the galaxy, destroying entire planets and spreading fear like a shadow of impending doom. 75 miles in diameter it has a surface like a metropolis full of detention blocks and interrogation cells. The death star is capable of housing a billion people and requires a million personnel to operate.

1st Place May 09 If you could put awesome into a human body, it would be him. He is the only human that has ever defeated a Klingon with his bare hands! He outsmarted Khan! He was on a show that not many people watched, and made 6 movies from that show! If that is not awesome, I do not know what is.

I suppose Kirk has finally got to believe in the no-win scenario. Damn it Jim!

Wow, looks like the CaptainOff has brought out the Kirk hate...
reply
I think that fact that Kirk's been a nominee for 3 consecutive contests, spanning more than 3 months, means many are getting weary of JTK.
reply
agreed, I love Kirk, but I'm ready to move on. Too many times a bride's maid. I think Picard appears to be the new Kirk. ;-)

This is for sure one of the matches I was excited for. I've got go with Kirk, because in TV/Movie-land I think he would have triumphed over the Death Star. He wouldn't have dropped a bomb down a heating shaft though, he'd have beamed in, gotten Darth Vader's mistress pregnant, punched the emperor in the belly, hit the self destruct button and escaped, just as his young handsome ensign was being force choked to death.
reply
Likely Scotty would have joined him on the away team that beamed into the Death Star but would have gotten himself captured by some stormtroppers, so in addition to all the above heroics, Kirk would have rescued his important crew mates, while leaving the red shirt "extra" to take one for the team. Awesome!

The Death Star could have destroyed the planet of the Jar Jar Binkses, but didn't.
reply
It should have...
reply
I know! That's an epic fail!
reply
Totally, epic epic fail
reply
I think the fact that a bunch of personafied catfish were able to take down that many droids and not get blown up only increases a giant laser's awesomeness.
reply
If it did, it would have been even more awesome.

yea lets all vote for queen of the mist now

You people are voting for something that is used to efficiently kill billions of innocent people at a time. Sure, it is fictional, but you are still voting for a fictional floating planetwide holocaust device. Think about it.
reply
Sorry, much like Yorky, I have to vote against religious fanatic terrorists like Luke Skywalker, so the Death Star has my vote.
reply
Your logic has won me over. A vote for the Death Star is a vote for peace, justice, law, order, and the American way. A vote for Che Guevara is a vote for Luke Skywalker, Osama bin Laden, and the families of the victims of 9/11 who don't support the Iraq War.

I endorse James T. Kirk as the greatest nominee ever to grace Awesomeoff.
James T. Kirk is the patron saint of Awesome. reply
I'm going to second that. Perhaps, Jim should be the Awesome poster child.
I like the patron saint idea. I need a little plastic dashboard Kirk for my car. Or perhaps a medallion for my neck.
reply
I think our captain rank, when we get there should definitely be 'Kirk'
reply
Without question.
reply
The generation that is spoiled by multi-million dollar special effect movies, like myself, does not seem to find Kirk who flew around in a carboard ship in front of a piece of paper to be so awesome
reply
Well, I am from the generation that is spoiled by those special effect movies, and let me tell you, Kirk makes that cardboard ship in front of paper look a million times better than all those special effects. Kirk has what most movies are lacking: Awesome!
reply
Well said. Look, there's even a poster: http://echosphere.net/star_trek_insp/insp_captkirk.jpg

new star trek movie is soo great! jj abrams did a great job.. didnt expect anything else from the co creator of Lost
reply
Yeah, I saw both Trek and Wolverine... Star Trek was waaayyy better. My teenage kids loved it too, and they've never even seen an episode of Star Trek
reply
As a huge Star Trek geek and purist, and a hater of JJ Abrams, I fully expected to hate it... Somehow, I loved it!
reply
Yeah, that movie was saucy.
reply
do you mind if i ask why you hate JJ Abrams?
reply
Lost is the most ridiculous show on TV, Cloverfield was an over-hyped waste of time and money, and I don't find the viral websites and videos cute whatsoever. I think he's the most over-hyped creative mind in Hollywood, and I was truly terrified he would single-handedly destroy the Star Trek franchise. Traditionally, Star Trek hasn't been about hype and flash, which is what the new film seems to be mostly about, but it's well put together, well written, well acted, and it has very few downsides. (most notably, Eric Bana's portrayal of the villain, Nero.... wretched.)
All in all, I was very pleased with Star Trek, despite my own fearful misgivings.
reply
So i guess your not much of a Lost Fan? i Never Saw Cloverfield, but Lost is an absolutely Amazing show
reply
My biggest beef with Lost is that they never answer any questions. they set up all these crazy mysteries, and never solve any of them. I watched two seasons of Lost and gave up. you gotta tie some things up every once in a while.
But I think we can all agree that Lost has given us one thing that's truly Awesome: Evangeline Lilly. My gods she's ridiculously hot.
reply
lol agreed... The 2nd season did drag and thats when alot of people stopped watching. But Lost has a awesome community and a bunch of different great podcasts. You should try and give it a 2nd chance
reply
You stopped too soon!
reply
You can tell they were very respectful of the Star Trek mythos. The trouble with prequels is how to make it exciting when we know the history already; it's very clever that they changed the timeline so that now we no longer can be sure what will happen next- but it's still close enough that they haven't lost any of the important history that would anger the fans. Well done.
reply
...And, by changing the time-line, they took away our right to bitch about not being true to the existing story lines.
reply
Ahh! Touche, komrade! I just still can't believe that was Eric Bana as Nero!
