I'm not sure what kind of beast I've unleashed by nominating TBT, with all the pro and con energy surrounding it. Just the size and scope of the project make it curious to me. I would have been as interested if he'd taken on the Odyssey or William Faulkner's novels with Legos.
I can totally understand why it would get nominated, and I think it would be a lot more awesome with the Odyssey, the Illiad, the Hamlet or the Tarvunty (www.tarvu.com).
It's just the self-seriousness of the project that I find unawesome.
I'm just sick of the one-vote wonders. All these new people that come on here and talk about how wonderful TBT is, and they only have one or two votes, and they're all for TBT. It's clear we've got another MLG invasion situation brewing here. I might actually think TBT was pretty neat if it weren't for these people. That being said, there's a difference between neat and awesome.
I agree, if it were an epic like the Odyssey, it would definitely come closer to the awesome line.
I wonder if a rule may be needed regarding "no religious entrants." It stirs up a lot of emotional responses, and incites the possibility for more "invasions."
Agreed. I'm not sure from where these one-vote people are coming, but I prefer the idea of an Awesomeoff community participating in all votes rather than ballot-stuffers coming in to pump up one thing. As for me, I'm greatly anticipating hitting the 1500 vote mark (maybe today?).
I agree on the awesomeness of the undertaking of the task- but yes, perhaps it is the subject matter that has stirred things up. Although if you go through some of the weirder ones (like "when to marry your sister-in-law") you kinda get the feeling that this guy is being tongue-in-cheek about it...
I don't think you can ban religious nominations, because there are so many things that people feel religous about.
Also, there were a swarm of my friends who signed up just for Robocop on a Unicorn. So there's no real way to ban the swarm strategy. We just have to know in our hearts that the top vote getter each month isn't neccessarily the one that won the moral victory. We need to keep up the discussion and win through presenting the better argument.
Even if you could ban swarm voters I don't think you should.
The thing about awesome is that it's subjective. Your opinions on awesome are not made more valid because you've voted on this website over a thousand times.
If someone thinks Lego religious references are awesome then so be it. Personally I think there better uses for lego, such as http://www.brickartist.com/.

If you think the Brick Testament is self-serious, you haven't read much of it. As far as I can tell, it's got a great deal of sly humor running through it; from graphic depictions of sex to showcasing nonsensical contradictions. If you spend an hour with it, you'll almost surely find yourself laughing a bit. You can get a glimpse of The Reverend's attitude by reading #10 from the about page.
I'm a little taken aback by the negativity surrounding people like myself who just showed up. I don't know what proper etiquette is when you hear that something you think is awesome is up for voting on a site called "AwesomeOff". I thought that hopping in and voting was the desired behavior. I'm not clear how that would be skewing the results as long as there are just real people voting according to their likes.
Of course, it is expected that I actually consider the opponent, and I have. In fact I struggled with voting TBT higher than Sammy Hagar's I Can't Drive 55 since that is incredibly awesome too. However I went with TBT because Sammy had just lost to a Cyclops (which I don't find that awesome -- no depth perception? Please!) so I kind of considered Sammy pre-defeated.
All that said, sorry if it makes the community seem less fun.

and, as for one-vote-wonders, you've only voted for one thing. That skews the results. It would be different if you were showing up and voting for the entire round-robin, but you have two votes and they're both for the same thing. You weren't here for the Major League Gaming incident, but when MLG was in the round robin, a bunch of gamers joined up and voted MLG through above everything else, so the result was that it won by so many votes that nothing else could touch it. Now MLG is (Ivan, you'll have to check my numbers) the Awesomeoff champion with the record for the most votes. Even though it may not be truly representative of what Awesomeoff is really about.
It also skews the results because some people will start voting for whatever is AGAINST TBT just to see it get handed a loss. I didn't really want to vote for Meerkat Manor, but I really want to see TBT go down. That skews the results as well.
talk about self-seriousness... this is "awesomeoff"; one of the most derrivative, if not at least wide-spread and unoriginal, ideas I've seen in a decade of working on the web. If the people who made this site took it as serious as you they could prevent people from jumping in to support one-vote wonders. Would have been easy to predict since that's the way it always works in A vs B sites.
The kicker is I actually like Banksy's work better even though I voted for The Brick Testament.
The brick testament fills me with despair rather than awe.
Possibly also some disgust ... but definitely not awe.
The brick testament is the most ingenius thing I've ever seen, it capures all the message of what the bible wants to say by graphics, very fun, smart.
