I can't remember the last time a toy really swept into pop culture the way the Rubik's Cube did. In the first year it was on the market, there was a sudden moment when every family in America owned a Rubik's Cube. People were measured by whether or not they had actually solved the cube, or by how many sides they could solve. Books were written about how to solve it, or how to solve it faster. And just about everyone had heard the brag of a friend, or a friend's kid, who had solved it once in X number of minutes.
