This is another entry that has been nominated a few times. Granted, we live in a hockey town, and spend a lot of hours at the rink. AwesomeOff in general is not a place to celebrate traditional sporting awesomeness, we feel there are millions of fans, packed stadiums and billions of dollars that give pro athletes all the love they really need.
But the 'Miracle on Ice' stands out in our minds. Never was there a game that had more riding on it, that was a bigger upset, that had a more improvable outcome than this game. If you are American, its the single greatest moment in the history of the olympics. If you are Russain, maybe it was they day you started to wonder if the Soviet Union was long for the earth.
If you have seen the recent film on the subject, great. But this is not an event that really needed to be dramatized. Hollywood to this day has never dreamed up a story as great as this game. We recommend the 2001 documentary 'Do You Believe in Miracles'. It does such a great job of capturing the scene, the mood, the times, and spends a good deal of time with the Russian players as well as the Americans.
