Bank manager and part-time Captain of the Walmington-on-Sea Platoon of the Home Guard (aka "Dad's Army" BBC TV 1968-1977).  Mainwaring served in the British Army in France, "during the whole of 1919 - somebody had to clear up the mess," and as such has no WWI medals: unlike many of the men under his command.

Constantly upstaged by his aristocratic public-school educated Sergeant (who, it is eventually revealed, was a Captain in the Royal Artillery in WWI), Mainwaring is often heard using the following lines to cover up for the fact that the tail very much wags the dog in his platoon: "just testing you," "took you a while to spot that one, didn't it?" and, "I was waiting to see how long it would take you to notice that"
